Authorities of the Prempeh College in Kumasi have decided to promote the over 40 students that were held back due to their poor academic performance.
According to the authorities, the students have been promoted on a probationary basis, to offer them the opportunity to better their grades.
The school emphasized that they did not expel the students for their poor performance, as was reported earlier.
The authorities of Prempeh College disclosed to Citi Fm, that they will announce their decision on Friday when they meet with the parents of the students, and will further discuss the conditions under which the students will be allowed to continue their stay.
Speaking to Citi FM, the assistant headmaster of administration Attah Gyamfi Jones stated: “Initially, there was a publication that we have sacked 51 students which was not true. It was not up to that number, however, we have not sacked anybody. We just called the parents to have some fruitful discussions with them on how best we can help the students because we cannot repeat the First year’s to join the Free SHS.”
He also noted that the school is considering remedial sessions for the students to help them with their performance, so they can join their colleagues in the second year.
The headmaster said these measures will help them monitor the students' work, so they can do better academically and in the West African Senior School Certificate Exams.
Mr Jones however, expressed disappointment that some parents of the students did not contact the school authorities for clarification on the matter, but rather went to media to call out out the school.
He added the school is proposing to offer counseling for students to help in their academic journey, along with the support of their parents and guardians.
