- A school librarian recently rejected Melania Trump's gift of books
- She said the books had "racist stereotypes"
- Trump's fans have found photos of Michelle Obama reading the same books to schoolchildren
US First Lady Melania Trump's fans on social media have exposed a school librarian's "double standards" after she rejected books Melania had gifted her school.
Melania sent several children's books by Dr Seuss to Cambridgeport Elementary School in Massachusetts last week.
However, the school's librarian Liz Phipps Soeiro rejected the books because their illustrations were "steeped in racist propaganda, caricatures, and harmful stereotypes."
Melania's fans on Twitter have now pointed out that former First Lady Michelle Obama read the same books to schoolchildren without any protestations.
They shared several photos of Michelle with the books in her hand as she read them to kids.
One user tweeted: "Dr. Seuss ok when Michelle Obama read it to children but now has racist undertones when our First Lady donates books? Unreal."
A White House statement said: "Turning the gesture of sending young school children books into something divisive is unfortunate, but the First Lady remains committed to her efforts on behalf of children everywhere."
The school district also disowned Soeiro's statement, adding that she was not authorized to reject or accept any gifts on behalf of the district.
