Rapper, Yaa Pono, has admonished students at the University of Ghana to smoke whenever they are faced with academic challenges.

Making this unusual statement during his performance at the Jubilish Hall Week Artist Night at the University of Ghana, Yaa Pono said: “I have an advice for you. If you learn and are not able to grasp, smoke.”

So far, it remains unsure the true reason behind the statement of Yaa Pono as many could deduce that he was just trying to be cynical over the controversial issue of the legalisation of marijuana.

Drug addiction is feared to be one of the main reasons for mental disorders especially among university students as reports from the Psychiatric Hospital show that 3 out of every 5 cases of mental health disparities is mainly due to the abuse of hard drugs such as marijuana.

The artiste who has a couple of songs on smoking recently told Kwame Bee of Kasapa FM in an interview that he smokes.

In recent times, there has been debates over whether or not marijuana should be legalised in Ghana as several musicians as Blakk Rasta, Kwaw Kese make the case that legalising Marijuana will help regularise the use of the hard drug.

Just recently too, an official from the Food and Drugs Authority also called for the legalisation of Marijuana to boost foreign investment and also external trade in the hard drug.

But as it stands now, one stands the chance of service close to 15 years in prison if found guilty of using the illegal substance.
