-Ghana opened their 2017 FIFA World U-17 campaign with a victory over Columbia
-It was arguably the toughest group game and the victory puts Ghana in pole position to qualify for the next round
Ghana's junior national football team, the Black Starlets have defeated Columbia 1-0 in their opening game of the 2017 FIFA World Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi in India.
It was a cagey encounter which could have been won by any of the two sides and Ghana was lucky to have run away with the three maximum points.
After heated exchanges between the two sides, Ibrahim Sadiq scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game in the 39th minute after tapped in from close range following Captain Eric Ayiah's pass.
Earlier, in the 28th minute, Ibrahim had hit the back of the net but the goal was disallowed for being offside.
The Colombians came back strongly in the second half, creating a lot of chances but try as they did, they could not find the back of the net and Ghana held on to record an important victory.
The Black Starlets will play the United States in their next game on Monday and India in the last group game on Thursday. A victory for them will qualify them for the second round of the competition.
