- Portugal have qualified for the 2018 FIFA World cup in Russia
- Cristiano Ronaldo was pivotal in his sides qualification
- The Real Madrid star man has hailed his teammates following their qualification
Cristiano Ronaldo has hailed his Portugal teammates following their emphatic FIFA 2018 World cup qualification in Russia.
The European champions needed a win over the Swiss, who went into the match with a 100% record in qualifying, to avoid having to go through a play-off and they overtook their rivals to take top spot with a 2-0 victory.
Ronaldo played the full 90 minutes, and joined his team in wild celebrations after former Arsenal defender Johan Djourou put the ball at the back of his own net and Andre Silva's tap in sealed their place in Russia next year.
CR7 posted a picture of the entire squad and management team celebrating on the pitch after the game, along with the caption: "Great team effort! Thank you for all your support. Russia, here we come!"
Portugal were among a number of big name countries in danger of missing out on automatic qualification, with a defeat in the reverse fixture looking.
Their vastly superior goal difference proved to be key though, with Ronaldo netting 15 of his side's 31 goals that allowed them to win the group ahead of Vladimir Petkovic's men.
Ronaldo, one of the favourites to win the Ballon d'Or for a record-equalling fifth time this year, will now hope to help Portugal cause an upset at a second successive major tournament after their shock win over France in the European Championships final.
The Real Madrid star forward might not have been on the score-sheet on the night, but he was instrumental in his side win as he appeared a menace to the opposing defenders.
