- October 11 was International Day of the Girl
- Beyonce has released a video of young girls performing her song "Freedom"
- 130 million girls in developing countries have missed out on school
The world marked International Day of the Girl on Wednesday, October 11.
As part of the event, hit singer Beyonce has released a video titled "Freedom." It features young girls aged between five and 11 performing her song with the same title.
The girls' performance is as powerful as the song. In the process, they highlight the plight of underprivileged girls around the world.
One shocking fact they highlighted is that over 130 million girls in developing countries around the world have missed out on education in the past decade.
The video also brings to the fore other issues affecting girls, such as child marriages, violence against girls, female genital mutilation and more.
Filmmaker MJ Delaney teamed up with Project Everyone's campaign dubbed #FreedomForGirls to create the video.
In an interview, he said: "A lot has happened globally, and I wanted to do something defiant and angry and demanding."
Chime for Change and Global Goals co-produced the video. UNICEF and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation provided the funding.
