- Lola Ogunyemi says the Dove advert was not racist
- She says stills from the advert have been taken out of context
- She adds that the full 30-second clip actually celebrates racial diversity
The black model who appeared in a Dove commercial that was slammed as "racist" says it was in fact not racist.
In an interview, Lola Ogunyemi said stills from the advert have been taken out of context.
A short GIF clip emerged on social media recently showing a black woman, played by Lola, taking off her t-shirt to reveal a white woman. The advert promoted a Dove body wash.
Social media users criticized it for seemingly suggesting that black skin is "unclean" and white skin is "clean."
However, Lola said the advert's full 30-second clip also showed the same white woman taking off her t-shirt to reveal an Asian woman.
She said it therefore celebrated racial diversity: "I don't feel it was racist. The screenshots that have taken the media by storm paint a slightly different picture."
Dove apologized for the clip, saying it had "missed the mark in representing women of colour thoughtfully."
