- The son, Hafiz Ali was part of a 3-member gang that robbed a liquor distribution company
- Each suspect was sentenced to 25 years in prison
- A guard at the company lost his life as a result of the attack
In what could be described as a distressing moment, a father and son stared into each other’s eyes for the last time as the son headed to jail.
The son, Hafiz Ali, was part of a 3-member armed gang that robbed a liquor distribution company in Accra; a guard was killed in the process.
As he headed to the transport vehicle, he turned and saw his family who had come to witness his conviction.
He then broke down in tears and apologized to his father.
“Forgive me for all the troubles that I have caused you since I was born. I know I might not survive prison, but all I need is your forgiveness,’’ he said.
His father thereafter moved closer to the vehicle and exchanged a few brief words with his son.
Yakubu Shaibu, another member of the gang, as well as Emmanuel Laryea, a worker at the company who provided access to the others, received 25 year-sentences each.
The charges were conspiracy to rob and robbery. Laryea received an additional charge of abetment of robbery. The sentences are to run concurrently.
