Fact check: EC boss COVID-19 positive status claim false

The infection rate of the coronavirus disease otherwise known as COVID-19 has experienced spikes which have increased the country's case count.

One news that came up within the cause of the week was the news of the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Adukwei Mensah testing positive for the coronavirus disease popped up.

HardTruthGH.com claimed in an article that Ghana’s EC Chair, Jean Adukwei Mensa had tested positive for COVID-19.

GhanaFact revealed that the undated article was circulated on social media without the realization that it is false.

The platform said, “the case of the EC chairperson is yet to be communicated to the general public by the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.”

Checks conducted by GhanaFact clarified a similar false claim published by the online platform, Newsmunews.net that the Electoral Commission had postponed Ghana’s elections to 2023.

Meanwhile, the online platform, HardTruthGH.com at the bottom of the article issues a disclaimer stating that it is a satire and parody portal, “hence content published[on their platform] is mostly for entertainment use only.

In other news, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) dragged the Electoral Commission (EC) to court over the latter’s decision to organise voter registration exercise in Senior High Schools (SHSs).

The NDC had earlier questioned the EC’s decision to register SHS students in schools without registration centres, describing the move as illegal.

The latest legal battle means the EC will have to suspend the exercise until the court brings finality to the case.
