COVID-19: Aspiring MP arrested for organising a rally in Assin South constituency

The police in the Central Region of Ghana have arrested an aspiring independent parliamentary candidate for viciously flouting the COVID-19 protocols by organising a rally.

The politician, who wants to become a member of parliament for Assin South constituency in the Central Region, is called Joseph Kofi Damte.

Kofi Damte was arrested after failing to give the police notice of his intention to hold a political campaign as the law stipulates.

He also did not abide by the coronavirus protocols for public gatherings. He didn’t wear a face mask as well as ensure that social distancing was observed.

According to a statement issued by the Central Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Irene Serwaa Oppong, said the Assin Fosu Divisional Police Command are investing the matter but they have the suspect in custody.

The statement noted that by the time the police arrived at the scene of the rally the program had already ended.

Nana Akufo-Addo has banned all public gatherings. The ban forms part of the government's measures to contain the COVID-19 virus in the country.

The ban affects all public gatherings, including conferences, workshops, funerals, festivals, political rallies, and church activities.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that some people have been arrested in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region for breaching the ban on public gatherings.

The suspects numbering 49 were reportedly arrested for attending a wedding without regard to the ban and social distancing protocols.

According to a report by local-based radio station Shaft FM, the wedding was being held at a suburb called Akaporiso.
