Dr. Umar: US Embassy celebrates Ghanaian YES beneficiary as he bags PhD from top US university (photo)

Dr. Umar Mohammed has graduated with a Ph.D in Renaissance Drama from the College of Liberal Arts at the Texas A&M University in the US.

The young Ghanaian achiever is one of the first beneficiaries of the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) programme.

From an undeserved community in the Northern Region, Umar, became a YES beneficiary some 15 years ago.

Umar reveals he had his first interaction with the U.S. Embassy in Ghana and the State Department through the YES Program at a very young age.

''This opportunity afforded me then opened a small world to wider horizons,'' he said.

Umar also earned his postgraduate degree through an Opportunity Grant assistance from the United States Embassy in Ghana’s EducationUSA center to pursue a programme in the US.

After years of hard work, he completed his master’s and further went on to pursue his Ph.D in Renaissance Drama.

His thesis focused on Shakespeare pedagogy as his research interests included Shakespeare and Early Modern drama, teaching Shakespeare to global and multicultural students, and race in the early modern period.

Announcing Umar’s laudable academic milestone in a Facebook post, the US Embassy in Ghana wrote:

''Umar Mohammed is one of our very first Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program student from the Northern region. This is an exchange program by the Exchange Programs - U.S. Department of State.

Umar has graduated with his PhD after participating in the YES program about 15 years ago. His travel to the United States to do his Masters was with an Opportunity Grant assistance from our EducationUSA center.''

Jonathan Mensah and wife paid a visit to take part in an initiative by the US Embassy in Accra to ''celebrate the Ghanaians who play in the @MLS and are in the spirit of giving back here in Ghana!''

''Ghanaian @MLS player @Jomens25 and his wife Kafui Mensah presented a signed jersey to Ambassador Stephanie Sullivan during a courtesy call this week,'' a statement on US Embassy Twitter handle said.
