Free SHS to cover private SHSs in deprived areas when I become president – Mahama

- John Dramani Mahama has promised to expand the Free Senior High School programme to cover private schools in deprived areas

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) was unarguably one of the strongest opposition groups to the New Patriotic Party's Free Senior High School (SHS) initiative.

The NDC stated categorically that the NPP's Free SHS policy was not going to be feasible, when it became a key campaign promise for the NPP ahead of the 2016 elections.

Four years down the lane, presidential aspirant of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama has promised Free SHS would cover private SHS in deprived areas if he wins the 2020 elections.

Mahama made this promise among several others when he launched the party’s 2020 manifesto on Monday, September 7, 2020, as monitored by YEN.com.gh.

" The NDC government will expand the Free SHS programme to cover students in private Senior High Schools in underserved/deprived areas,” Mahama said

In a bid to continue what was initiated by the NPP, Mahama stated that the NDC would ensure that the many challenges that have fraught the initiative would be properly addressed.

Mahama also stated that the NDC would abolish the double-track system introduced by the NPP

In other news, John Dramani Mahama has promised that if the NDC is voted into power, his government will exempt small businesses from tax.

He said the payment of corporate income tax will be scrapped for the small business in order for them to reinject the money into their businesses.

For medium businesses, Mahama says the corporate income tax will be reduced from 25% to 15%.
