Fact check: John Mahama did not win the 2020 presidential elections

Fact check: John Mahama did not win the 2020 presidential elections

- President Nana Akufo-Addo won the 2020 presidential polls as declared by the EC

- Former president Mahama rejected the outcome and challenged it in court

- The court dismissed his petition as meritless

Singer and Political activist, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as APlus has insisted that John Dramani Mahama did not lose the 2020 presidential elections.

Re-echoing the stance of the former president who led the NDC into the elections, APlus said there was no winner in the polls because no candidate garnered the 50% plus one threshold.

“He (John Mahama) didn’t lose the elections. I think the election should have gone to a run-off,” he said on Starr FM.

This claim by APlus is, however, misleading because the certified results clearly showed that Akufo-Addo won the elections.

Again, there is no evidence of systematic fraud or rigging in the December 2020 elections.

In fact, during the 2020 election petition trial, the star witness of former President Mahama was not able to provide an alternative figure to what was declared by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) on December 9, 2020.

After 17 days of sittings including five days of pre-trial, the Supreme Court on Day 18 of the hearing dismissed the petition saying it was meritless.

The seven-member panel in the election petition trial said it cannot order a rerun of the 2020 presidential polls.

The panel held that the petitioner in the case failed to adduce “cogent evidence” to back his claims that there was no winner in the December 7, 2020, presidential elections.

Akufo-Addo defeated Mahama in the said election to secure another four-year term; collecting 51.302% of the votes cast against the latter’s 47.359%.

The votes difference between the two candidates stood at 517, 231, representing a four percentage point, one of the highest since 1996.
