After clutching onto a toxic marriage for years, she mustered the courage and walked out without a plan for the future.

Unemployed and with little ones to care for, she found herself battling depression and hopelessness.

"It was draining, but I had to hold on for the sake of my babies," Mary shares.

Supported by strangers

Mary acknowledges the support she received from other women, whom she calls her "sisters."

Amidst the darkness, rays of light began to shine through the now-late Ruth Mbithi, who stepped in and sponsored a three-month course for her.

"The degree I had wasn't significant," Mary explains, adding that Ruth's kindness and support provided her a lifeline during her darkest days.

Another guardian angel, Elizabeth Owiti, offered Mary free therapy sessions until she regained her mental health.

Doris KG also played a significant role in helping her overcome her traumas, a milestone for which she is eternally grateful.

After weeks of struggling to find someone to leave her kids with in vain, she had to let the chance go painfully.

"I am lucky another opportunity for a research project came up in Rwanda and I managed to go," she said.

How did Mary's life change?

Four years later, Mary looks back with pride on her journey and is profoundly proud of herself for not giving up.

"I overcame all," she says proudly," I'm here looking like a Form Two girl. I call myself blessed and highly favoured of the Lord."

She is now a sane mother to her babies and still trusts the process.
