A female reporter has been “sexually harassed” by a fan at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Colombian correspondent Julieth Gonzalez Theran was reporting ahead of the opening game between Russia and Saudi Arabia when the incident happened.

The DW reporter was reporting live from the city of Saransk, in Moscow, when a man grabbed her breast and kissed her on the cheek.

Gonzalez Theran continued her report unabated but complained bitterly about her treatment in the aftermath of the broadcast.

We do not deserve this treatment. We are equally valuable and professional,” Gonzalez Theran told Deutsche Welle.

When we went live, this fan took advantage of the situation. But afterwards, when I checked to see if he was still there, he was gone.

“For me it is an isolated incident. There are always fans that compliment you and behave respectfully. This one went too far,” she added.

She was later backed by her employers, with DW posting the footage on social media, and referring to it as an “attack” and “blatant harassment”.

DW presenter Cristina Cubas also tweeted: “This is not funny. It’s not a kiss. It’s a non-consenting attack.”

In an interesting twist, however, some online commentators downplayed the incident and felt the female reporter was exaggerating.

One actually labelled the criticism as “feminist hysteria”, and others suggested the kiss should be seen as a “welcome” or a “compliment”.
