Kwame Bonsu thanks Kotoko for his chance at redemption

Footballer Kwame Bonsu has expressed gratitude to his team Asante Kotoko for the chance to play again after it looked like it was all over for him following his imprisonment in Sweden for a conviction of sexual assault.

Bonsu has been on the track of redemption since the latter part of 2018 after Kotoko offered him a contract following a trial stint. The player, in an interview with said he never saw this second chance.

“Those 13 months were the most difficult period of my life but now I am happy to be out, happy to be back home where I grew up and among friends and family and happy to have an opportunity to play football again with Asante Kotoko," Bonsu said.

The 24-year-old made his debut for Kotoko in their CAF Confederation Cup tie against Cotonsport Garoua of Cameroon in January 2019.

Bonsu was strutting his stuff for Swedish lower league side, Gefle IF. He was settling into life in the Scandinavian country.

Culture shock and extreme weather aside, Bonsu found reason to keep going, after all, he was one of the few from Ghana who had gotten the chance to be gainfully employed as a footballer.

So Bonsu got married to a Swedish woman by name Maria. Maria would later file charges against her husband alleging that she had been assaulted.

Bonsu served 13 months out of the original two-year conviction. He was then deported to Ghana.

In a leaked audio recording that emerged after Bonsu had come to Ghana, a voice supposedly that of Maria, confessed that she wanted a way out of the marriage. She said she had overestimated Bonsu's chance at "making it big" in football.

But Bonsu says all of this is behind him. He has promised himself to give his best at the job he has chosen to do.

“I know and believe I can make it again. I want people to be able to look at me and say after everything he went through, he didn’t give up,” he said.
