AFCON 2019 matches to observe 6 minutes break due to extreme heat

- AFCON 2019 matches will observe three minutes break in either halves of every game in Egypt

- This is due to the harsh weather conditions players will encounter during their matches

- And this development has been confirmed by CAF medical committee

All is now set for the first ever summer Africa Cup of Nations championship staging in Egypt this month, with 24 countries ready to battle for the top prize at the end of the competition.

However, due to the harsh weather conditions expected during the tourney, the Confederation of Africa Football have announced that six minutes break will be observed in each of the matches.

CAF, through its medical committee confirmed the development, saying that either halves of matches in the north African country will enjoy three minutes water break each.

And these measures are taken into consideration to ensure the players do not burn out before the expiration of their matches while the tournament is going on.

"The medical committee confirmed that matches at this year’s AFCON 2019 will feature 3-minute breaks in each half due to extreme heat."

Egypt will set the ball rolling tomorrow when they battle Zimbabwe with the aim of claiming maximum points at the end of their meeting.

The Pharaohs are also the most successful team in the history of this tournament after winning seven titles.

Cameroon are next with five titles and they are also the defending champions having defeated Egypt at the final of the 2017 edition in Gabon.

The Black Stars of Ghana have won four AFCON titles since the start of the tourney, but they last won the tournament about four decades ago.

While Nigeria are three time champions with their last triumph under late Stephen Keshi in South Africa six years ago.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that Egypt will get the 2019 AFCON tournament started as they Zimbabwe in the tournament's curtain raiser at the Cairo International Stadium.

The final group stage matches will be played on Friday, July 5, before the second round of the competition starting three days later.

The quarter finals and semis will be played between Wednesday, July 10, and Sunday, July 14, with the finals scheduled for Friday, July 19, at the iconic Cairo International Stadium.
