Former Ghana international Michael Essien believes Olympique Lyon will not be a walkover when they face Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

The two clubs will come face to face on Wednesday evening, as they battle for a place in the final of the competition.

Lyon have already proved how tough an opponent they are after eliminating both Juventus and Manchester City.

The French side knocked out Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. after a 2-2 aggregate in the round of 16, before thrashing Pep Guardiola’s charge 3-1 in the quarter-final.

However, they will be facing a rampant Bayern Munich side that recently put eight goals past Barcelona.

Essien admits the encounter will be tough but has tipped Lyon to give the German champions a run for their money.

It’s possible [for Lyon to win], especially in this one-off tournament format, anything can happen in 90 minutes so you can’t rule them out," the ex-Chelsea star told TV3.

In the Champions League, they have the same old traits of hard work, belief and good organisation.

"They play to their strengths regardless of the opposition and that’s why they are doing so well.
