- World football governing body has banned the President of CAF
Ahmad Ahmad has been banned for 5 years over an issue of financial misconduct
- He assumed office as the CAF president on March 17, 2017
The world's football governing body FIFA has handed a 5-year-ban to Ahmad Ahmad, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
According to a report sighted by YEN.com.gh on the official website of FIFA, Mr Ahmad Ahmad was barred based on an investigation of financial misconduct which he was found guilty.
FIFA's statement indicated that an independent Ethics Committee had found Ahmad Ahmad guilty of having breached art. 15 (Duty of loyalty), art. 20 (Offering and accepting gifts or other benefits) and art. 25 (Abuse of position) of the 2020 edition of the FIFA Code of Ethics, as well as art. 28 (Misappropriation of funds).
The investigation, according to the world governing body, spanned from 2017 to 2019.
Some of the CAF-related issues that caught the attention of investigators included governance issues, the organisation and financing of an Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca, involvement in CAF’s dealings with the sports equipment company Tactical Steel and others.
The ethics committee added that based on information gathered, Mr Ahmad had breached his duty of loyalty, offered gifts and other benefits, mismanaged funds and abused his position as the CAF President which were all against FIFA's code of ethics.
This comes after Ghana's former Football Association president, Kwasi Nyantakyi suffered a similar fate from the apex football body in 2018.
Mr Nyantakyi who at the time of his ban was a FIFA council member was caught in a secret investigation spearheaded by Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
A documentary titled "Number 12" was aired in Ghana and other African countries which filmed Mr Nyantakyi reportedly taking some bribe from an undercover journalist who posed as a football investor.
This saw him losing his position as the Ghana Football Association president after the video was aired to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Speaking about issues related to football, YEN.com.gh earlier reported that Ghana's general captain, Asamoah Gyan, has turned a new age on Sunday, November 22, 2020.
To mark the day, the Ghanaian international splashed splendid photos of himself on social media and also threw a plush private birthday party.
Among the many celebs that graced the celebration were Stonebwoy and brother of the footballer, Baffour Gyan.
On the day, Asamoah Gyan showed off his musical talent by doing his rendition of Samini's Gyae Shi and he also performed with award-winning dancehall star, Stonebwoy known in real life as Livingstone Etse Satekla.
