The Rio Olympics started on Friday 5th August 2016 and so at YEN, we decided to take a trip down memory lane and chose 10 of the most memorable athletes Ghana has had over the years!

Here are some of the athletes we believe all Ghanaians have grown to love over the years.
1. Margaret Simpson
Margaret Simpson is a Ghanaian heptathlete. She won a bronze medal at the 2005 World Championships, setting several personal bests in the process. Her personal best is 6423 points, achieved in Götzis in May 2005. Margaret Simpson decided to quit Ghana and compete instead for Mauritius.
2. Janet Amponsah
Janet Amponsah is a Ghanaian athlete specialising in the sprinting events. She represented Ghana at the 2013 World Championships without qualifying for the semifinals. She is again representing Ghana at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
3. Vida Anim
Vida Anim is a Ghanaian sprinter who specializes in the 100 and 200 metres. Together with Mavis Akoto, Monica Twum and Vida Nsiah she holds the Ghanaian record in 4 x 100 metres relay with 43.19 seconds
4. Kaya Forson
Kaya Adwoa Forson (born 19 March 2002) is a Ghanaian swimmer. She competed in the 200 metre freestyle and 200 metre backstroke at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia
5. Aziz Zakari
Abdul Aziz Zakari is a Ghanaian athlete specializing in the 100 metres.
6. Christian Amoah
Christian Amoah (born 25 July 1999) is a Ghanaian weightlifter who currently competes in the 85 kg event. He competed in the Men's 77 kg at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Amoah will represent Ghana in the Men's 85 kg at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
7. John Ampomah
John Ampomah (born 11 July 1990 in Accra) is a Ghanaian athlete specialising in the javelin throw.
8. Atsu Nyamadi
Atsu Nyamadi is a Ghanaian athlete competing in the decathlon. He won medals at the 2014 African Championships and 2015 African Games. His personal best in the event is 7567 points set in Eugene in 2015. This is the current national record.
9. Emmanuel Dasor
Emmanuel Dasor is a Ghanaian sprinter specialising in the 400 metres. He represented Ghana at the 2016 World Indoor Championships without advancing from the first round.
10 . Alex Amankwah
Alex Amankwah (born 3 March 1992) is a Ghanaian middle-distance runner specialising in the 800 metres.
