The 33-year-old joined Persib as the club’s biggest ever signing early this month.
Essien, according to reports, has eclipsed former Australian star, Sergio van Dijk, who previously received $337,000 to become the highest paid player in the Indonesian top-flight.
“Some of you have known Essien’s contract, he’s now the highest-paid footballer in Indonesia,” Persib team manager, Umuh Muchtar, was quoted as saying by state-news agency Antara.
Essien moved to Indonesia after six months without a club, having terminated his contract with Greek side, Panathiniakos.
He played for Lyon in France before moving to Chelsea.
He also enjoyed stints with AC Milan and Real Madrid.
