It is uncommon to see a professional footballer in Ghana taking his or her tertiary education very seriously.

In Ghana most sportsmen and women are seen as people who dropped out of school.

However, that notion is not entirely true as there are some sportsmen and women who have combined sports and education.

Despite his talent, he took his education serious – Abel had his secondary education at St.Thomas Aquinas.

After acquiring his Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) in 2005, he had to wait for seven years before enrolling at the University of Education in Winneba.

After I completed secondary school I had to wait for so long trying to figure out whether to further my education or not because when I was a kid my aim was to be a footballer,” Abel told YEN.com.gh.

After getting admission at the University of Education (Bachelor Science in Health Physical Education Recreation and Sports) he was drafted into the school’s football team and he was their key player.

He won two-straight goal kings from 2014 to 2015. Due to his impregnable display he signed for Ghanaian second-tier side Kotoku Royals.

Abel never wasted time as he became the club’s poster boy scoring goals from all angles.

After completing his university education, he joined Ghana Premier League side Great Olympics the same year. He quickly won the hearts of the fans after scoring six goals in four games.

As injury is in inevitable in football, Abel suffered a career-threatening knee injury and he was out of action for close to nine months.

This year, Abel surprised many football pundits as he rejected a big money move (GHC 6,000 per month) to Bahrain to further his education.

When the deal came I had sleepless night because I wanted to complete my masters’ degree.”

For Abel, every footballer in Ghana needs a life after football. He said life after football is not only about coaching but exploring other areas.

To the former Great Olympics goal poacher,. football is always good but education is priceless.

Abel is currently a free agent and he is in his first year in his master’s degree.
