True or False: Did NPP promise never to borrow?

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) assertion that the governing New Patriotic Party( NPP) promised never to borrow when it comes into power has been disputed.

The NDC as a party has been propagating that, Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia tweeted while the NPP was in opposition that it will not borrow to run government.

NDC MP for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini was the last top politician to reiterate that Dr. Bawumia tweeted in 2016 that that an Akufo-Addo government will never borrow.

The Minority has consistently hit out at the Akufo-Addo government, who they claim has taken the national debt at almost ¢200 billion as at the end of the first quarter of 2019.

But YEN.com.gh checks reveal that the said Twitter account was a fake one. It wasn’t the official Twitter handle of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Also spokesperson for the Vice President, Dr Gideon Boako has also clarified and denied the claim by the minority.

In a statement issued on Monday, 17 June 2019, Dr Boako said the NDC failed to produce evidence to their claim.

I wish to place on record to Mr Suhuyini, his NDC cohorts and all those who take delight in communicating such falsehood that Dr Bawumia never made any tweets or statements during the 2016 campaign period that the NPP government would never borrow if voted to power.

The NPP has however, challenged anyone who has evidence to the contrary to adduce same.

Dr Bawumia and the government of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo still stand by the principle of responsible public expenditure financing through the optimal mix of tax revenues, borrowed funds, grants or any other sources useful to the development of the country,” the statement added.
