According to New York Post, the musician left his keys on his white Range Rover SUV ignition and went to fuel on the opposite side at Quiktrip gas station in Buckhead, Atlanta.
Akon was on the passenger side of the car and saw someone getting into the driver's seat before they took off, leaving him stranded at the station at midnight.
This was just about when he was nearly filling his tank and the suspect, a black male, was spotted getting out of another vehicle before getting into his.
Akon said he saw his SUV and the other ride, a BMW sedan, take off simultaneously and realised things were not okay.
According to Atlanta police, it only takes a second for someone to jump into another person's car and take off, something that has become a norm.
Luckily, the 48-year-old was not hurt, and his phone was still in the car, which he used to track the car twice in two different locations, and it was finally found by police early Tuesday.
Police are still looking for the suspect(s) involved, who are still at large.
The Lonely hitmaker recently visited Africa and even met Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and his wife.
He arrived in the landlocked country on April 2 and was received by one of the president's advisors and Ugandan artiste Eddy Kenzo.
The star seemed to have successfully achieved his mission if a tweet by Museveni was anything to go by.
Taking to his official Twitter account on Monday, May 17, Museveni shared a photo of an investment delegation that included Akon and his wife Rozina Negusei and other concerned parties.
The singer, who has a keen interest in Africa, held talks with President Museveni on tourism, energy, and other infrastructure development areas.
The singer is reported to be searching for investment opportunities that will solidify his footprint in the continent.
