Owusu Bempah, the communications director of the National Democratic Party (NDC), takes over from Alfred Ogbamey who had held the job since 2011.

He told Accra-based Starr FM that he had received his appointment letter from the presidency and that the appointment was effective immediately.

"It is true. I have been appointed Ghana Gas communications director. Once the President has given me my letter, it takes effect immediately,” he said.

Although he is an NDP member, Owusu Bempah campaigned hard for the Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2012 and 2016 general elections.

At Ghana Gas, he will be required to develop and implement a communications strategy for a state agency that processes, transports and markets the natural gas resources of the country.

Owusu Bempah has been receiving messages of commendation from some Ghanaians on social media since news of his appointment broke.

Some social media users praised the appointment, citing the role he played in helping the NPP win power.

There were, however, some who felt that Owusu Bempah was undeserving of the appointment.

One social media user said the appointments showed that the NPP lacked competent people to govern the country.
