High-profile Ghanaian personalities with ‘fake’ doctorate degrees

The issue of Ghanaian personalities having fake doctorate degrees has been trending for sometime now, especially after some prominent persons were caught up in the whole scandal.


However, it has now been revealed that many more Ghanaians with the title 'Dr' did not acquire them genuinely.


A research report titled "THE ACCREDITATION CHALLENGES IN TRANSNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL ECOLOGY: THE GHANAIAN EXPERIENCE" has brought out a list of other prominent Ghanaians whose doctorate degrees are questionable.


According to the report, jointly published by Dr. Prosper Yao Tsikata, an Assistant Professor of Communication and Dr. A. Kobla Dotse, Director, Chemical R&D both the Valdosta State University in the United States, over 30 Ghanaians acquired fake doctorate degrees in the last two to three years alone.

Yen.com.gh has compiled a list of some high-profile Ghanaian personalities with ‘fake’ doctorate degrees, as cited in the research report.

(Dr.) Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey (Abeiku Santana) 


Abeiku Santana was given a Honorary Doctor of Humanities in recognition of his contribution to the Christian Ministry and Leadership by the Pan African Clergy Council and Bible Seminary.


He acquired it in 2011, and the radio presenter has been walking with the title 'Dr' since then.


However, it appears the institution that bestowed the honor on him is not accredited to do so.

(Dr.) Kofi Portuphy, NDC Chairman 


The opposition National Democratic Congress' (NDC) Chairman, Kofi Portuphy, got his honorary doctorate degree in 2014.


Then the coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization was awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree by the Day Spring Christian University of Mississipi, USA, for his contribution to human rights awareness.


But he has also been cited in the report to hold a fake doctorate degree.

(Dr.) John Kudalor, IGP 


The retired police chief was awarded a Doctorate Degree from the Dayspring Christian University-Dallas in USA in 2015, but received the honor when he visited the US in 2016.


The former Inspector General of Police (IGP) has however been mentioned as one of those with questionable doctorate degrees.

(Dr.) Hassan Ayariga


The 2016 presidential candidate of the APC actually has two doctorate degrees, which he describes as "one earned and one awarded".


In the lead up to the 2016 elections Mr Ayariga was accused of possessing a fake doctorate degree by the Electoral Commission (EC), which he strongly denied.


However, his name has been cited in the recent report of persons with fake doctorate degrees.

Gifty Anti


The ace broadcaster was honored with a doctorate degree in 2012 by the Global Center for Transformational Leadership.


However, Gifty Anti's doctorate honor has been disputed following the compiled report.

Dzifa Aku Ativor


Former Road and Transport minister, Dzifa Ativor was also listed in the report on persons with fake doctorate degrees.


She is also reported to have acquired her honor from an unaccredited institution.
