The incident, which occurred at Battor Atratidzi, near Battor Adidokpo, tragically claimed the lives of three young men from the same household: Tsatogo Elisa, Awunyo Sylvester Doe, and Mornyuie Besah.

Concerns over road safety in Ghana

The accident, attributed to a combination of factors including a small pothole, the absence of speed bumps, and excessive speeding, underscores a growing concern for the safety of road users, particularly motorcyclists and pedestrians.

While the government and contractors have been lauded for the construction of the Juapong–Mafi Adidome road, the increasing frequency of overspeeding vehicles poses a grave threat to countless lives daily.

Relative's account of the accident

Famous Afudego, a relative of the deceased, recounted the tragic events, painting a vivid picture of the day.

He made it known that the three young men were returning from the funeral of his [Famous] grandfather, David Afudego, at Akosombo when the accident occurred.

“They were coming from a funeral at Akosombo when the accident happened. I was also at the same funeral but decided to join a car back to Battor and they used a motorbike,” Afudego told YEN.com.gh.
He added, “Immediately I got to Battor, I had a call that my brothers were involved in an accident, and so I rushed back immediately. My ‘spirit’ left my body when I arrived at the scene and saw them by the roadside. Elisa died on the spot, and the other two were rushed to the Catholic Hospital in Battor, where they were pronounced dead a few hours after arrival.”

Afudego further told YEN.com.gh that the driver of a vehicle trailing behind the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) the victims were travelling in provided a crucial detail regarding the cause of the collision.

“The driver who was at the back of them told us [Afudego and those at the scene] that the driver was dodging a pothole and as a result, entered my brother’s lane, resulting in the head-on collision,” he explained.

Asked if the driver responsible for the accident was arrested, the deceased’s brother said that he has yet to be found. The police are reportedly looking for him while his vehicle was towed to the police station.

The tragic deaths of Tsatogo Elisa, Awunyo Sylvester Doe, and Mornyuie Besah serve as a reminder of the critical need for proactive measures to safeguard lives on the newly constructed Juapong – Mafi Adidome road.

Meanwhile, efforts to reach the Police in the North Tongu District for comment on the accident have so far proven futile.
