The people of the Dagbon traditional area have a new Ya Naa in the person of Yo Na Abubakar Mahama.
He was confirmed Ya Naa elect by the kingmakers of Dagbon led by the Kuga Naa Adam Abdulai.
Yo Naa Abubakari Mahama was selected after the successful final funeral rites of the late Ya-Naa Yakubu Andani II.
He fills the 17-year-old vacant skin. Yo Na Abubakar is the head of the Andani Royal family in Dagbon.
The protracted chieftaincy dispute between the Abudus and Andanis following the murder of Ya-Naa Yakubu Andani II in March 2002, left the skin vacant for over a decade.
But following successful funeral rites, the new Ya-Naa was selected.
The decision of the traditional selection committee is also in line with the Dagbon constitution of 1930 and the Supreme Court decision of December 1986.
The Supreme Court in 1986 ordered that only occupants of the gates of Mion, Karaga and Savelugu are eligible to contest for the kingship of Dagbon. The Supreme Court also barred regents of deceased Ya Nas from contesting.
Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo has congratulated the people of Dagbon for working to bring to an end decades of division in the area.
The President in his statement also congratulated the Andani and Abudu Royal families for successfully ensuring that the funerals of Ya-Naa Mahamadu Abdulai IV and Ya-Naa Yakubu Andani II were held peacefully.
He added that government will continue to support Dagbon to in restoring the kingdom to its former glory and greatness.
