Former president John Dramani Mahama has visited victims who suffered gunshot wounds during the violence that marred the Ayawaso West by-election on Thursday, January 31, 2019.
Violence erupted at Ayawaso by-election barely two hours after the polls which were to elect a replacement for the late Kyeremateng Agyarko.
The chaos which occurred around the Bawaleshie residence of the NDC's candidate, Delali Kwasi Brempong, ended with many suffering gunshot wounds.
In all, seven people believed to be NDC supporters were injured with two of them in critical conditions.
The situation led the main opposition party to withdraw from the election blaming the ruling NPP for using their vigilante groups to cause mayhem.
Former president Mahama who was in the Volta Region campaigning for the upcoming NDC presidential primary suspended his campaign and returned to Accra to have first-hand information on the situation.
Sharing photos of the visit to the hospital on his Facebook page, Mahama described the "gun attack and violence on members of the opposition NDC during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election [as] a sad day for our democracy."
He, however, called for calm among his party's supporters despite the unacceptable attack on them.
"I visited some of the victims of Thursday’s gun attack and violence on members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
It’s a sad day for our democracy, but I used the opportunity to continue to call for calm among supporters of the NDC despite the unacceptable attack on them.
I will be returning to the Volta Region later this morning to continue with my campaign, which had to be rescheduled to enable me visit and wish our injured colleagues well," the former president stated.
Meanwhile, the NPP's Lydia Seyram Alhassan won the election to replace her husband as the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon.
She polled 68.80 per cent of the valid votes cast. Her closest challenger, the NDC's Kwasi Delali Brempong polled 30.52 per cent while William Kofi Dowokpor of the PPP and Clement Boadi of the LPG polled 0.58 and 0.10 per cent respectively.
