Kenya: School principal dies of COVID-19 days after hosting staff meeting

- Principal Maurice Muholo hosted a meeting which was attended by at least four other members of staff at the school

- After the meeting, he travelled to his Migori home via Oyugis town where he reported he was not feeling well

- Muholo was referred to Kisumu for treatment but lost the fight to the disease before he could be admitted

- One of the teachers who attended the staff meeting tested positive for the virus and was admitted to an isolation centre

Ober Secondary School in Rachuonyo East, Homa Bay county is mourning its principal who succumbed to COVID-19.

YEN.com.gh has learnt the principal, Maurice Muholo, lost the battle to the respiratory disease days after he hosted a staff meeting at the school.

According to Homa Bay county's ministry of health, among those who attended the meeting was an employee from the finance department and three teachers.

County Health Executive Richard Muga said one of the teachers, a 24-year-old, had tested positive for the disease and medics suspect he contracted the virus following the May 19 staff meeting where he interacted with the principal.

After the meeting, Muga said, Muholo visited his home in Migori county where he started complaining he was not feeling well.

His condition worsened and he was transferred to Kisumu where he died before doctors could attend to him.

"He was referred to Agha Khan Hospital in Kisumu county but failed to get admission at the facility for lack of a comprehensive health insurance cover. He was transferred to another private hospital within Kisumu.

Tests were done on samples collected on the teacher and it turned positive. Health officers from the county government began contact tracing,” Muga was quoted by Daily Nation.

He was buried at his Siaya home on Wednesday, June 3.

Apart from the 24-year-old teacher who tested positive and admitted to Malela isolation centre, other instructors and staff at the learning institution who met the school head were advised to self-quarantine.

Some of Muholo's relatives, however, dismissed medics' report that he died of COVID-19 insisting he succumbed to malaria and typhoid.

As of Sunday, June 7, the Ministry of Health had confirmed four COVID-19 cases in Homa Bay, Kisumu (12), Siaya (10) and 24 in Migori.

The country's tally of the disease was 2,767 out of which 752 were recoveries and 84 deaths.
