Consumers owe ECG GH¢1.6bn

The government, private institutions and individuals owe the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) about GH¢1.6 billion in electricity bills as of 2014.

Acting director of finance of the ECG, Frank Anokwafo, told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that government owed GH¢950 million as a result of subsidies and non-payment of electricity bills, while private institutions and individuals owed GH¢610 million.

The revelation follows difficulties the ECG is facing in the distribution of electricity and also the issue of over-billing of prepaid meters.
