On Thursday, August 21, 2026, Elumelu shared a highlight reel on Instagram from the United Bank for Africa's Graduate Management Accelerated Programme Class 2026 graduation ceremony.
The footage, set to Peter Okoye's song *I Can't Look Away*, showed the business mogul on stage presenting awards, interacting warmly with graduates, and basking in the celebratory atmosphere of what was clearly a milestone moment for the institution.
The exchange that started it all
The video arrived in the aftermath of an incident from the very same event that had already sent Nigerian social media into a frenzy. During the ceremony, a young executive trainee addressed Elumelu as "Good morning, Tony" while speaking on stage.
Elumelu appeared to mishear her initially, responding with "Toyin? Toyin?" before she corrected herself. He then told her directly that she should address him as "Mr Elumelu" or "TOE."
The clip of that exchange spread rapidly online before Elumelu's own graduation video had even been posted, drawing sharp and divided opinions about workplace etiquette, seniority, and how young professionals ought to address executives.
Fans scan Elumelu's footage for the trainee
Once Elumelu's graduation video went live, many viewers turned into detectives, combing through the crowd to spot the trainee who had become the face of the debate. The consensus in the comments was that she did not feature in the footage at all, a detail that drew its own wave of reactions.
