June Floods: 4-Month-Old Baby Still Missing as Death Toll Reaches 39 - Interior Minister

Nearly two months after the June 29 floods devastated communities across Ghana, one family is still waiting for answers.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed shared on Monday, August 24, that a four-month-old baby remains the only person still officially unaccounted for following the disaster.

The minister made the disclosure at the Government Accountability Series, where he laid out the full scale of the floods' impact on the country.
According to him, 39 people lost their lives and close to 92,000 were affected.
"A total of 91,989 persons from 18,398 households were victims of the disaster. One person remained missing, a four-month-old baby, and 39 deaths," Mr Muntaka said.
He added that search and recovery efforts had otherwise accounted for all other victims, but the infant had not been located.
June 29 floods: Regional breakdown
The disaster cut across 77 districts in seven regions, with the Greater Accra Region bearing the heaviest burden.
Over 56,000 residents spread across 27 districts were affected there, and 17 of the 39 recorded deaths were in the region.
The Central Region came second, with 21,882 people affected across 16 districts and eight fatalities.
The Volta Region recorded 9,466 affected persons across seven districts and four deaths.
Further inland, the Ashanti Region had 1,461 people affected across 16 districts, while the Western North Region reported 937 affected persons across six districts, with no deaths.
The Western Region saw roughly 2,000 people affected across two districts. One district in the Eastern Region was also impacted, though no specific population figure was provided for that area.

Baby still missing as families await closure
The sheer volume of those affected underscores how widely the floods disrupted daily life, displacing households and upending entire communities.
Yet for one family, the statistics carry a far more personal weight.
Mr Muntaka did not share any details about the circumstances surrounding the baby's disappearance, nor did he provide an update on what specific steps were being taken to locate the child.
The continued absence of the infant means the June 29 floods remain an open wound for at least one household still holding out for news.

MP enjoys jollof with flood-affected constituents
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Member of Parliament for the Weija-Gbawe Constituency, shared a meal with some residents in his jurisdiction who had been affected by the flood.
Several residents in the Weija-Gbawe Constituency have been affected by flood after there was a water spillage from the Weija Dam.
According to the residents, there was no announcement before the spillage was done.
