Afenyo-Markin Sues Sammy Gyamfi, Multimedia Group, Peace FM For Defamation Over Extortionist Claims

Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin has filed defamation suits against Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi and two media organisations, disclosing the legal action on the floor of Parliament when the House reconvened on Monday, August 24, 2026.

The announcement came after a prolonged and increasingly bitter public exchange between the two men over the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) and the reported US$1.7 billion loss recorded by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) in 2025 under the scheme.

The dispute took a sharp turn when Mr Gyamfi labelled Afenyo-Markin an "extortionist" in response to the Minority Leader's sustained pressure for accountability over GoldBod's operations and the reported BoG losses.

Afenyo-Markin characterised the remarks as false and defamatory, and said he had moved swiftly to seek redress through the courts.

Two separate suits have been filed. The first, identified as Suit Number GT/1029/2026 and titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited, was lodged at the Accra High Court.

The second, Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM, was filed at the Achimota Circuit Court.

Speaking on the matter before his colleagues, Afenyo-Markin confirmed the filing of both suits and expressed confidence in the judicial process.

"I have accordingly caused writs to be filed in Suit Number GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited at the Accra High Court, and Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court," he said.

He added: "I have every confidence that in the fullness of time the court will make the appropriate determination."

The underlying dispute centres on the extent to which GoldBod bears responsibility for the losses attributed to the BoG under the DGPP. Afenyo-Markin has consistently demanded explanations from both the government and the GoldBod leadership, while Gyamfi has firmly rejected assertions that GoldBod itself was responsible for the reported losses.
