Ghana Academy of Learning was established in 1959. After merging with the National Research Council in 1963, it was renamed Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS). The institution was split into The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1963. Fourteen of the Academy’s 20 founding fellows were Ghanaians, 13 men and 1 woman. At the time of its launch, the Ghana Academy of Learning was the first in independent Africa. The original aims and objectives of the Academy of Learning were not changed.

The aims and objectives of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences were retained as originally defined in the Ghana Academy of Learning:

  • To encourage the study, extension, and dissemination of knowledge of the arts and sciences.
  • To launch and maintain proper morals of endeavor in the arts and sciences.
  • To recognize outstanding contributions to the advancement of the arts and sciences in Ghana
  • To conduct other things as that are favorable or incidental to the accomplishment of all or any of the foregoing dedications.

The obligation of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences is fulfilled through a program of activities, including the organization of lectures, symposiums, public forums, workshops, and conferences all year long. The academy awards of prizes for academic excellence and in recognition of unresolved contributions to knowledge in the arts and sciences.

The Academy’s major activities include the Sectional Lectures in the Sciences and Humanities, Fellows’ Inaugural Lectures, the Founder’s Week Celebrations, and the Annual Memorial

Lectures such as the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Lecture, the J. B. Danquah Memorial Lectures, and the Ephraim Amu Memorial Lecture.

The Academy currently has a membership of 89 fellows. The council of the Academy is the governing body, and consists of the principal officers of the Academy, namely the president, the two vice-presidents for both the arts and sciences section, the honorary secretary, the honorary treasurer, the immediate former president, and five other fellows elected by the general meeting of fellows.

The president, who is the head of the Academy, is responsible for the general supervision of the affairs of the Academy and is assisted by the two vice-presidents. The honorary secretary supervises. The secretariat in discharging its administrative functions, and the honorary treasurer is in charge of the Academy’s finances. A secretariat of 15 full-time administrative, secretarial, and clerical staff led by an executive secretary support the academy.

However, the Academy retains its core character of being composed of the highest level of intellects and professionals in the country. The academy also strives to be a think tank, advises the government and contributes to the policy creation procedure in the interest of the country’s growth.
