Nana Addo appoints former WHO director to coordinate Coronavirus response programme

A former Deputy Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr. Anarfi Asamoa-Baah, has been appointed the Presidential Coordinator for Ghana’s Coronavirus Response Programme.

Dr. Asamoa-Baah’s appointment was confirmed by President Akufo-Addo on Thursday, March 19.

His new role requires that he coordinates all aspects of the coronavirus response programme by government.

He will also serve as the President’s main go-to man when it comes to issues relating to the pandemic.

Ghana has recorded more cases of the novel coronavirus in the last seven days, leading to a bit of panic among the public.

The first two cases were recorded last Thursday, but the number of infected persons has since increased to 11.

However, the Ghana Health Service has assured the public that all the victims are stable and are recovering.

Dr. Asamoa-Baah is experienced in the field of health, having supervised the creation of a new Health Emergency Programme in WHO following the Ebola outbreak in 2014.

He also the man who led the WHO’s work in developing the Ebola vaccine and led the team that developed a formal process of quality control for the training and verification of Emergency Medical Teams.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that government is constructing a new 50-bed capacity epidemic disease treatment centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The facility which is expected to be completed in a month is to deal with the coronavirus cases and other infectious diseases.

The new facility will augment the disease treatment centers at the Ridge and Tema General Hospitals.
