Gov't will renovate witches camp instead of closing them down - Gender Minister

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Cynthia Mamle Morrison has stated that completely closing down witches camps is going to be a difficult task to achieve.
According to her, this is because the various witch camps provides a safe haven for women who have been accused of witchcraft.
Speaking at the weekly ‘Meet the Press’ session held at the Ministry of Information, as reported by Myjoyonline, Cynthia Morrison said, when she together with her team moved to the Northern region, their initial thoughts were to close down all such places but they had a change of mind when they got there.

“When we were moving, we were thinking that we will close down the witches camp since that is the only solution we had moving from Accra. “But when we got there we realized that it was not as easy as sitting in Accra and thinking that you have to close down the camp,” she said.
The Gender Minister said what they saw, made the government to among other things consider renovating the camps for the victims.
Mamle Morrison said that the elderly people staying in the camps who were not enrolled on the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme were registered within the shortest possible time.

In other news, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has promised to phase out witches camps in the next NDC government.
She made this known when she was speaking to inmates of the Gambaga Witches Camp in the North East region.
According to the educationist, the existence of witch camps in the country is a dent on the image of the country and will be one of the first things the next NDC government will abolish.
