In an interview with Kafui Dey, shared on August 23, 2026, Hopeson described a marriage that gradually descended into violence, leaving her emotionally drained and fearing for her life.
Diana Hopeson on the cycle of abuse
Hopeson said she initially struggled to make sense of her former husband's behaviour, repeatedly forgiving him as the situation worsened.
"In this wild stage, everything was excess, and unfortunately, the abuse too was too much. He hit me and I don't wish anyone to go through this," she recounted.
She later came to understand that her former husband was battling personal struggles, but said that knowledge did little to ease the pain she experienced.
"Come to think of it, to realise that the person was sick. If you don't know that it is a crisis, all sorts of things go through your mind and you have to now forgive the person for what he had done," she explained.
Over time, the repeated cycle of violence and reconciliation wore her down completely.
"You will keep forgiving, and it will keep happening. It got to a point where I started dying inside because I had become numb," she shared.
Though her faith offered some comfort, Hopeson acknowledged that prayer alone was not enough.
"I was carrying everything to God in prayer and that gave me so much relief, but you need help outside," she said.
She added that the well-being of others around her former husband also weighed heavily on her decision to act. She eventually sought assistance from the head office of her church.
Death threats that made Diana Hopeson run
The situation took a far more dangerous turn when her former husband began making explicit threats on her life. Hopeson disclosed that he threatened to acquire a firearm and kill them both.
"I got death threats too and that's when I decided to run for my life. He said he would get a gun and that will be it," she stated.
Her alarm deepened when she realised the threats were not idle. Her former husband, whose stepfather had served in the military and retained contacts at the barracks, appeared to be actively pursuing a weapon.
"He told me that he called someone and he's asking for the gun," she disclosed.
Hopeson also recalled a frightening incident during a car journey, when her former husband accused her of smiling at people at a traffic light, an episode she said added to the intense fear she was already living with.
