Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has denied a MyJoyOnline report claiming he was "summoned," insisting it was misinformation and demanding the outlet correct the record.

The denial comes amid an escalating dispute between Afenyo-Markin and Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi.
Gyamfi has accused the Minority Leader of extortion after Afenyo-Markin questioned a reported GH¢22 billion, or roughly $1.7 billion, loss linked to the Bank of Ghana's Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
He has publicly challenged Afenyo-Markin to sue him over the "extortionist" label, saying he is prepared to defend the claim in court.
Afenyo-Markin, in turn, has rejected the allegations as false and defamatory, insisting his questions were driven purely by Parliament's constitutional oversight duties.
Afenyo-Markin denies Joy Online's report
Taking to X on the morning of August 24, 2026, Afenyo-Markin firmly rejected suggestions that he had been called to account, framing the meeting instead as a routine gathering he himself had convened. He wrote:
"Stop the misinformation! Stop the misinformation! Stop the misinformation! Your report that I have been summoned is untrue. On the contrary, ahead of the reconvening of Parliament, I have summoned my colleagues for our Caucus meeting, as is routinely done ahead of every Meeting of Parliament, to strategise and coordinate our parliamentary business."
He went on to insist the gathering was standard practice, adding:
"This is a regular practice of the Caucus and should not be misrepresented as anything else. Joy FM, pull down the misinformation on your website and correct the record."
The clarification came on the very morning senior members of the NPP Parliamentary Caucus were reportedly demanding Afenyo-Markin face them over Gyamfi's extortion allegations, with a caucus meeting scheduled ahead of Parliament's afternoon sitting to allow him to respond to questions from his own colleagues.

Unity Party petitions bodies to probe Afenyo-Markin
According to an earlier report by YEN.com.gh, the Unity Party petitioned six state bodies, including the IGP, CID, OSP, and Attorney-General, to investigate Afenyo-Markin over the $1 million extortion allegation levelled against him by Sammy Gyamfi.
The petition added further institutional pressure to a controversy that has already drawn intense political and public scrutiny.
