Afenyo-Markin: IGP, Others Petition Probe Minority Leader Over $1m Extortion Claim From Sammy Gyamfi

Two senior officials of the Unity Party have formally petitioned six investigative bodies in Ghana, calling for a probe into extortion allegations levelled against Minority Leader of Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin by Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi.

Solomon Owusu, the party's Director of Communications and Spokesperson, and Andrew Appiah-Danquah, its Director of Legal and Constitutional Affairs, jointly submitted the petition, citing the seriousness of the allegations as grounds for an urgent investigation.

In the petition, the two officials stated that they were acting in the public interest and in fulfilment of their civic and constitutional responsibilities.

GhanaWeb reported that they referenced Article 218 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which they said: "enjoins every citizen to protect and preserve public property and to expose and combat the misuse and waste of public funds and property."

The petition specifically addressed claims that Afenyo-Markin, either directly or through a third party, sought to obtain one million United States dollars from Gyamfi, or such other amount as any investigation might establish.

"We, the undersigned, Solomon Owusu, Director of Communications and Spokesperson of the United Party, and Andrew Appiah-Danquah, Director of Legal and Constitutional Affairs of the United Party, respectfully present this petition in the public interest and in furtherance of our civic and constitutional responsibility to promote accountable government, protect the integrity of public institutions and resist every form of corruption and abuse of public power," the petition read in part.

The two party officials argued that investigating the allegation was essential to the broader fight against corruption in Ghana.

Afenyo-Markin had not publicly responded to either the GoldBod CEO's remarks or the Unity Party petition at the time of publication.

YEN.com.gh reported that Gyamfi said that he is not connected to GHS200 million in lost monies.

Gyamfi had never met or maintained a professional connection with businessman Dominic Bonsu, according to the legal notice.

GoldBod acknowledged that Bonsu's company licence was suspended and that the High Court in Accra had detained and remanded him.
