Retired Ghanaian boxer Ayittey Powers has publicly apologised to National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah after remarks he allegedly made were widely interpreted as a threat against the sports administrator.

In a statement shared by Sporty FM Ghana on August 21, 2026, Ayittey Powers sought to distance himself from the interpretation of his earlier comments, appealing directly to Ampofo Ankrah for forgiveness.
Ayittey denies intention to harm NSA Boss
The former boxer firmly rejected suggestions that he posed any physical danger to the NSA Director-General, stating that he did not own a firearm and had no capacity for violence.

"I don't own a gun... I can't even kill a chicken," Powers said in the statement, addressing the controversy head-on.
He went further to explain the context behind his original remarks, characterising them as words designed to provoke rather than threaten.
"I'm pleading with Yaw Ampofo Ankrah; I was just saying something to tension him," he added.
Police inquiry follows alleged threat
The matter had drawn the attention of the Ghana Police Service, which was reported to be looking into claims that Powers made remarks suggesting he could use a gun against Ampofo Ankrah.
The alleged comments sparked widespread public attention and prompted calls for accountability.
Powers' apology marks a significant shift in tone following the controversy, with the retired boxer acknowledging that his words caused concern while maintaining that no genuine threat was ever intended.
