A closer look at the newly unveiled cenotaph of the late Defence Minister, Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, has shown the details used to preserve his memory at the Ministry of Defence.

The monument, unveiled as Ghana marked one year since the August 6, 2025 helicopter tragedy, features a large bronze-coloured bust of Dr Omane Boamah dressed formally in a suit and tie.

The sculpture rests on a dark, pyramid-shaped pedestal with a red strip running around its upper section. Written boldly in gold on the front are his name, “Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah,” his position as Minister for Defence, and the inscription “Feb - Aug 2025.”

Omane Boamah's cenotaph stands out

Behind the bust is an imposing polished stone structure that adds to the appearance of the memorial.

An opening directly behind the sculpture frames the bust when viewed from the front, while golden leaf-like designs stretch around both sides of the structure.

The combination of the bronze-coloured sculpture, dark stone and gold details gives the cenotaph a striking appearance.

Flowers were also placed around the monument during the ceremony, with several dignitaries and family members gathering near it.

Memorial honours late Defence Minister

President John Dramani Mahama unveiled the cenotaph at the Ministry of Defence on Thursday, August 6, as part of events commemorating the first anniversary of the helicopter disaster.

Dr Omane Boamah was among eight people who died when a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025.

The permanent memorial at the Defence Ministry now ensures that his brief tenure as Defence Minister and service to the country remain visibly remembered.

Omane Boamah's children appear at memorial

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that the children of the late Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah made a public appearance at a memorial service in Accra on August 6, 2026.

The National Interfaith Memorial Service honoured the eight victims of the Obuasi helicopter crash at the UPSA Auditorium.

Footage shared by popular Ghanaian blogger Gists Online showed the three children dressed in matching traditional mourning attire with their family.
