According to Ophelia, the raffia palm used to construct the homes is subjected to chemical treatment to make it fire-resistant and guard against termite damage.

Ophelia's standard two-bedroom raffia palm home costs about $50,000, about 30% less than a building with conventional blocks and bricks.

The Orthner & Orthner Associates is an architectural firm in Ghana that is the brains behind the construction of houses in Ghana built with rammed earth. Their three-bedroom homes go for $20,000 and are near completion, which should be available on the market soon.

The brick houses are built with interlocking stabilized soil blocks (issb), bricks made from compressed mixed soil using an ISSB machine. They are sun-dried and interlocking, which saves builders time and money. The bricks are also treated and protected from harsh weather conditions.
