Meet Ghana's boxing world champions

Ghana is regarded as one of the countries to have produced lots of boxing world champions.

In Africa’s boxing history, Ghana has won more world titles than any country. Now Ghana has won eight world titles at different weight classes.

It was the likes of David Kotei Poison who won Ghana’s first world title before Azumah Nelson, Nana Yaw Konadu, Ike Quartey and others won theirs.

YEN.com.gh brings you the eight boxers that have won world titles for Ghana:

1. David Kotey Poison

He won Ghana’s first world title in 1975. Kotey proved everybody wrong by beating favorite Ruben Olivares to win the WBC featherweight belt. He defended his belt three times before losing it to Danny Lopez in 1976.

2. Azumah Nelson

Nelson became Ghana’s second world champion in 1984, he destroyed Wilfredo Gomez in round 11 to win the WBC World featherweight belt. He held the title for ten years before losing it to Jesse James Leija in 1994.

3. Nana Yaw Konadu

Konadu followed the suit, and he won Ghana’s third world title after a win over Gilberto Roman to win the WBC World super flyweight belt in 1989.

4. Ike Quartey

Quartey won the nation’s fourth World title in 1994. He stopped the then champion Crisanto Espana in round 11 to win the WBA World welterweight belt.

5. Alfred Kotey

Kotey made it number five for Ghana in 1994, he defeated Rafael Del Valle via unanimous decision to win the WBO World bantamweight title.

6. Joseph Agbeko

Agbeko stopped Luiz Alberto Perez in round seven to win Ghana’s sixth World title as he claimed the IBF World bantamweight belt in 2007.

7. Joshua Clottey

Clottey won Ghana’s seventh World title by recording a technical decision over America’s Zab Judah to win the vacant IBF World welterweight belt in 2008.

8. Isaac Dogboe

Dogboe added his name to the tall list by winning Ghana’s eighth World belt. Dogboe stopped crowd favorite and champion Jessie Magdaleno in round 11 to win the WBO World super bantamweight belt on April 28th, 2018.

He defended his belt last Saturday against Hidenori Otake. He blasted out the Japanese warrior in round one.
