Here are the six greatest Black Stars coaches of all time, ranked from six to one.
6. James Kwesi Appiah
Appiah wrote his name into the history books by becoming the first Black Ghanaian coach to lead the Black Stars at a FIFA World Cup in 2014. This was just two years after he was appointed Ghana boss, according to the BBC.
Calm and composed on the touchline, Appiah, who is currently in charge of the Sudanese national football team, also guided the team through the 2013 AFCON campaign.
While his tenure brought mixed results, his achievement broke barriers and inspired future local coaches to dream bigger.
5. Avram Grant
The Israeli coach enjoyed one of the strongest spells with Ghana in recent memory. He took the Black Stars to the AFCON final in 2015, narrowly losing on penalties to Ivory Coast, and returned to the semi-finals in 2017.
Though he never delivered the elusive trophy, Grant restored belief in Ghana’s ability to compete at the highest level.

4. Ratomir Dujković
If Ratomir Dujkovic had stayed longer as Black Stars head coach, he would certainly have achieved more success and ranked higher.
The Serbian tactician holds a special place in Ghanaian football. In 2006, he led the Black Stars to their first ever FIFA World Cup, where they reached the round of 16 in Germany, as noted by Wikipedia.
His disciplined approach and ability to blend youth with experience gave Ghana a new global identity, marking the start of a golden era.
3. Milovan Rajevac
Arguably the greatest ever non-Ghanaian to coach the Black Stars of Ghana, Milovan Rajevac masterminded Ghana’s historic run to the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals in South Africa, the furthest the nation has ever reached.
Under his watch, the Black Stars also finished runners-up at the 2010 AFCON. Known for his defensive solidity and tactical organisation, Rajevac’s tenure remains one of the most celebrated in Ghana’s football history.
2. Fred Osam-Duodu
One of Ghana’s most versatile coaches, Osam-Duodu guided the Black Stars to AFCON glory in 1978. He also excelled at youth level, leading the U-20s to a silver medal at the 1993 FIFA World Youth Championship.
His influence stretched beyond Ghana, as he later won the U-17 African Championship with The Gambia in 2005. Few can match his longevity and breadth of success.
1. Charles Kumi Gyamfi
At the very top stands the legendary C.K. Gyamfi, Ghana’s greatest coach of all time. He won three AFCON titles (1963, 1965, 1982), a record that stood unchallenged for decades.
Gyamfi, Ghana's version of Sir lex Ferguson, brought silverware and also instilled a fearless identity in the Black Stars, turning them into a continental powerhouse. His legacy remains the benchmark for every Ghanaian coach who followed.
