The incident came in the 17th minute when Hull won a corner. United goalkeeper Senne Lammens produced a brilliant point-blank save, but Semi Ajayi reacted quickest to fire the rebound into the net.
Replays, however, showed Maguire appearing to mistake his own teammate, Noussair Mazraoui, for an opponent and hold him back as Ajayi moved into position.
That moment quickly became a talking point online, with supporters questioning the 33-year-old's decision-making.

Hull punish Man Utd after Maguire blunder
The defeat carried an added twist for Maguire, who spent two seasons at Hull between 2015 and 2017.
His return to the MKM Stadium proved anything but memorable as United struggled to respond after falling behind.
Noble Mendy later doubled Hull's advantage, leaving Michael Carrick's side with no way back.
The result gives United plenty to ponder before their next league outing, when they travel to face newly promoted Ipswich United on August 30.
Maguire handed suspended prison sentences

The England international was charged with attempted bribery and other offences after being arrested during a 2020 brawl in Mykonos.
