For Caleb Yirenkyi's parents, their son's Premier League debut was a moment to treasure.

Thousands of miles from London, they sat on a wooden bench at a game centre in Bechem, Ghana, watching their 20-year-old son line up against Arsenal.

Caleb Yirenkyi's parents watch him in EPL debut

Yirenkyi was handed a starting role by Coventry City for the opening game of the 2026/27 Premier League season, just weeks after completing a club-record move from FC Nordsjaelland.

A video shared on X captured the touching moment as his parents followed the action, proudly watching their son take his first steps on one of football's biggest stages.

How Yirenkyi performed against Arsenal

The occasion proved a challenging introduction to English football.

Yirenkyi picked up a yellow card in the 27th minute and found himself battling against Arsenal's midfield trio of Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly. He was eventually replaced by Victor Torp in the 62nd minute.

According to Sofascore, the Ghanaian completed eight of his 11 passes, made three recoveries, committed two fouls and registered 13 touches.

Yirenkyi's Premier League debut ends in defeat

Unfortunately, Yirenkyi's debut did not go according to plan.

According to Al Jazeera, Arsenal quickly established their dominance, with Kai Havertz opening the scoring in the 15th minute after connecting with Riccardo Calafiori's pass.

Bukayo Saka doubled the advantage eight minutes later before captain Odegaard completed the 3-0 victory shortly after half-time.

For Coventry, the defeat was a tough reminder of the challenge ahead in their first Premier League campaign in 25 years, according to Squawka.

For Yirenkyi, however, the experience could prove invaluable. Going up against some of England's finest midfielders will offer lessons that no training session can replicate.

Back home in Bechem, his parents can look back proudly on a day their son finally stepped onto the Premier League stage.

Yirenkyi discloses why he chose Coventry

In a previous publication, YEN.com.gh reported that Caleb Yirenkyi has disclosed that a conversation with Frank Lampard convinced him to join Coventry City in a £26 million deal.

The 20-year-old said Lampard’s vision for his development was the key factor behind his decision.
