The United Kingdom government has formally published the eligibility conditions for the British National (Overseas) visa, setting out who qualifies for the dedicated immigration pathway and what residency requirements must be satisfied before an application can proceed.
The BNO visa is available to individuals who are at least 18 years old and satisfy one of two qualifying conditions: they must either hold British national (overseas) status themselves, or be the child of a BNO holder born on or after 1 July 1979.

Residency conditions for BNO visa applicants
Beyond the nationality requirement, the UK government has outlined residency criteria that differ based on the location from which the application is submitted.
Those applying from outside the United Kingdom must have their permanent home in Hong Kong. Applicants already living in the UK and applying from within the country must be permanently resident in one of four specified territories: the United Kingdom itself, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or Hong Kong.
The scheme offers eligible holders the right to live, work, and study in the UK, with a route available to eventually apply for settled status and, subsequently, British citizenship.
What British National (Overseas) status means
British National (Overseas) is a category of British nationality created specifically for Hong Kong residents ahead of the territory's handover from British to Chinese administration in 1997. Although BNO holders carry a form of British nationality, they were not previously entitled to reside in the United Kingdom as a right, a gap the BNO visa was designed to address following political changes in Hong Kong.
