Fight against crime - Bawumia says you can just dial 191 for free

- A police short code has been introduced to reduce crime in Ghana

- Vice president says the short code is linked to your house address

- The government says it remains to combat crime in the country

Vice president of the republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that the fight against crime has now been intensified across the country.

Dr. Bawumia says there is now a speed-dial number you can dial for free in case of an emergency. The short code is 191. This code replaces the long telephone numbers of the Ghana police that we never remember.

The vice president is telling us that this shortcode is closely linked to your digital house address number which shows the police your house address as soon as you call them for help.

“You can dial 191, the number one nine one, from any part of Ghana and you will get a police call center and they will respond to your needs. We don’t have to try to remember many numbers of different police stations. If you want the police just dial 191 and you will get responses” Vice President Bawumia announced during the 2017 West African Security Services Activities (WASSA) of the Ghana Police Service 2017.

Over the past months, there have been bouts of armed robbery cases in the country with victims losing not just property but also their lives.

In fact, the outburst of daylight robbery coupled with highway theft has seen government introduce strict security interventions to deal with the scourge of robberies on a large scale.

This has been through the deployment of a joint police and military force to deal with the scourge of insecurity in the country.
