As earlier reported by YEN.com.gh, Rawlings died on Thursday, November 12, 2020, after reportedly suffering complications from COVID-19.
Rawlings is reported to have been on admission at the Korle-Bu Hospital for a few days before he passed on.
His death has shaken Ghanaians and taken over social media as many people are still finding it difficult to come to terms with the news.
The saddest part of the whole story of Rawlings' death is the fact that he only recently held a funeral for his mother, Victoria Agbotui.
At the burial and funeral ceremony held on Saturday, October 24, 2020, Rawlings looked very healthy even though he was overwhelmed with emotions.
Rawlings mother had died in September days after attaining the ripe age of 101 years old but the former president seemed to be in som much pain.
Despite shedding tears and looking gloomy, Rawlings looked strong and moved about briskly during the funeral activities.
His death has, therefore, come as shocking news for many Ghanaians who saw him at his mother's funeral exactly 20 days ago.
Jerry John Rawlings was born on June 22, 1947, and he celebrated his 73rd birthday recently with some lovely family photos.
He left behind his wife Nana Konadu Agyeman, and four children - Zanetor Rawlings, Yaa Asantewaa Rawlings, Amina Rawlings, and Kimathi Rawlings.
He was a former Ghanaian military leader who ruled Ghana from 1981 to 1992 as Head of State.
He was then democratically elected President of Ghana in 1992 and served till 2000, after ruling as a military leader from December 31, 1981.
Meanwhile, the office of J.J. Rawlings has released an official statement following the news of the former president's death.
In the statement signed by Rawlings' daughter, Zanetor, the family has asked for privacy in this difficult time.
The statement also indicated the funeral arrangements will be announced soon.
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that a number of Ghanaians have thronged his residence following the news of his death.
